Nehemiah M. Jones
Tenor, Composer
Nehemiah Micah Jones, tenor and composer, is a native of Bellingham, Washington, whose artistry moves fluidly between the concert stage and the composer's desk. Raised in the Pacific Northwest, Jones draws on the region's landscape and light as a wellspring for his musical imagination, channeling influences as varied as Ravel, Daniel Catán, Szymanowski, Debussy, Berg, and R. Nathaniel Dett into a voice distinctly his own. He began his musical life as a cellist before turning to singing, and that instrumental sensibility continues to inform the lyricism and color of his writing for voice and ensemble.
Since beginning formal study, Jones has maintained a prolific and expanding catalog of work, recently turning his attention to text setting as a central part of his compositional practice; a natural extension of his commitment to bridging the arts of performing and composing. This past season, he celebrated a milestone composition recital titled APRICITY, which featured the premieres of several new works. Looking ahead, Jones is preparing for the premiere of his new orchestral work, The Coronation of Light, with the Western Symphony Orchestra in the winter of 2027.
His works have premiered at the WWU Performing Arts Center Concert Hall, the Seattle Opera Center, and Bellingham, Washington’s First Congregational Church, among other venues, including The Oracle for Pierrot ensemble (2023), String Quartet No. I and Poems from a Red Refrigerator (2024), his chamber opera A Spring Like This for three voices and piano trio (2025), and Wool Turned Red for two baritones and piano trio (2026). Recent works include Five Fantasies for trio d'anches, mandolin, and guitar, his song cycle Wandering Songs, and Rain Moved Me Stilled for high voice and piano, all premiered in 2026.
As a tenor, Jones has appeared as a soloist with the Western Symphony Orchestra and Starry Night Orchestra, including performances of Corigliano's Poem in October: A Dylan Thomas Trilogy (2024), Lili Boulanger's Vieille Prière Bouddhique (2026), and Handel's Messiah (2025). His operatic endeavors include Valcour in Chevalier de Saint-Georges's The Anonymous Lover (WWU Opera, 2024), Tamino in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte with the Austrian American Mozart Academy (2025), and Bill in Samuel Barber's A Hand of Bridge and Samuel in Ned Rorem's Three Sisters Who Are Not Sisters (WWU Opera, 2025).
